Chakra is a Sanskrit term meaning “wheel,” which refers to wheel-like whirling energy centers or vortices of energy that play vital roles in the proper functioning of the body.
“Major Chakras or Energy Centers are actually major acupuncture points. Chakras are very important parts of the energy body.”
Master Choa Kok Sui
These chakras are basically located in the surface of the etheric body of man, with a stem and a root in the body, each having a specific role in our system.
The functions of the chakras are not just confined to physical functions; they also control and affect the psychological and spiritual conditions of a person.
Just as there are vitals and minor internal organs in the body, the energy body has several major, minor and mini chakras that control and energize these organs altogether. Being a source of energy or Prana, when these chakras malfunction, they adversely affect the vital internal organs in the body. This phenomenon is called disease.
While the major chakras control, energize and are responsible for the proper functioning of major internal organs, minor and mini chakras supply energy to less important parts of the visible physical body.
The psychological state of a person is also dependent on the condition of various chakras. Weaknesses such as laziness, irritability, worry, forgetfulness and strengths such as productivity, compassion, creativity, intelligence and intuition are all products of the chakras, which can be purified or further improved.
Some chakras are also sites or centers of psychic faculties that if activated will led to the development of certain psychic powers; such as the Crown chakra that is the center for higher intuition and divine oneness.
The average size of the chakras basically depends on the evolutionary development of a person. The bigger the size, the more intelligent, advanced and evolved the person. Arhatic Yoga in this case is an advanced spiritual technology that serves as a medium to accelerate this evolutionary process.
“When quite undeveloped they appear as small circles about two inches in diameter, glowing dully in the ordinary man; but when awakened and vivified they are seen as blazing, coruscating whirlpools, much increased in size and resembling miniature suns.”

In traditional literature, mainly seven chakras have been introduced while sometimes you may have read about 9, 11 or even 12 major chakras in spiritual textbooks and esoteric sciences as well. According to Master Choa Kok Sui, all are correct. The key word is only!
“They have never mentioned that there are only seven chakras. The key word is only. The problem is that the students or readers assume that there are only seven chakras. This is an assumption without any basis… The student must remember that truth is dynamic, not static. This is the basis behind progress. One must be ready to discard lower truth for higher truth.”

In Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna mentions about the city with nine gates. Upanishads refers to a city with eleven gates, which correspond to the 11 major chakras. In Kabbala, there exist ten energy centers with one hidden center that makes a total of eleven.
Grand Master Choa Kok Sui through his books and teachings reveals the existence of eleven major chakras together with one more chakra; the 12th Chakra.
In alternative medicine and complementary therapies including Pranic Healing these chakras are basically being treated to improve a wide range of physical and psychological ailments. In such systems, the physical and psychological function of the chakras and how they affect ailments is the area of focus.
To know more about the chakras and their functions, you are encouraged to read a book by Grand Master Choa Kok Sui with the same title.
